ABOUT THE PRESIDENT

STANFORD E. ANGION

 

Stanford Angion was born in Coy Alabama, to Rosetta Angion a single parent. He joined Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Coy, Alabama, as a young boy. In fall 1982, he attended Alabama A&M University, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Soil Science and received an active-duty commission into the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant. Angion graduated from Alabama A&M University in December 1986 and began his active-duty military service in August 1987. He spent 13 years in the United States Army and attained the rank of major. In 1999, Angion accepted his call into the gospel ministry to preach and was honorably discharged from the Army in October 2000.

February 4, 1995, Angion was married to Athenia Marie Hudson from Cleveland, Ohio. They met and married in Oahu, Hawaii. Two daughters were born to this union, Ivana and Kendra. Both are graduates of Alabama State University, teach in the Montgomery Public School System.

Angion was licensed as a baptist preacher in March 2000 and ordained later that year. He served as Youth Pastor for two years at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Hinesville, GA, under the leadership of Rev. M.L. Jackson. In July 2003, he was installed as pastor of Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church in Coy, AL, where he presently serves. Under his leadership, the congregation has built a Family Recreational Park, renovated the sanctuary, and started MGS&A Institute. The Institute offers a variety of programs and courses designed to train students in the performing arts and enhance elementary and secondary student learning.

As a sophomore at Alabama A & M University, Angion became a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated and is presently an active member of the Alpha Eta Sigma Chapter in Montgomery.

Angion’s educational accomplishments include a Bachelor of Soil Science from Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL; a Master’s of Journalism and Mass Communications, from Marshall University in Huntington, WV; a Master’s of Education, from the University of West Alabama; a Master’s of Arts in Bible and Pastoral Ministry, from Selma University; and a Doctor of Education from Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL. In November 2003, Angion published a book, Unleashing the Inner Strength of Youth; Nov. 2014 he published Invigorating Hope; and July 2015, he published an Implementation Guide for Invigorating Hope.

On August 1, 2016, Angion assumed responsibilities as the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Selma University. In June 2020, he was assigned to the position of Provost/Vice President, a capacity in which he served until appointed as the Interim President at Selma University. He served a as interim President at Selma University from February 12 to April 19, 2021, and was appointed as the 25th President of Selma University on April 19, 2021, where he presently serves.
